There has always been a debate about video games being harmful for child development, but recently there have been studies done regarding video games aiding the development of children with ADHD. Taner discusses the positive effects that video games have on children with ADHD that play them. Taner created a list of seven reasons that show that video games can help ease the symptoms of ADHD in children.
1. Games teach us solving problems and encourage children to think about. There are a lot of video games that are designed specifically for a child’s brain development, but even more simple teaching kids how to solve problems logically.
2. Playing games creates strong social ties that encourage social interaction. Assist in the socialization of the child. There are 65 percent of the games with social themes.
3. Video games are a strong incentive, most of them are designed to reward and praise after the victory, which strengthens confidence. Different skills, levels and risk of loss/reward teach children not to be afraid of failure and that they can always start over.
4. Video games teach strategic thinking. Children exercise objectively thinking about the game, themselves and their performance. Most strategy games offer a variety of opportunities to reach the goal. Players also receive an automated response to the decision, which results with quickly learning all their weaknesses and virtues.
5. Video games teach teamwork. Most of today’s games are designed for playing in pairs or teams. Whether you are fighting against alien attacks or solving puzzles, video games offer children a wealth of opportunity for constructively work as a team.
6. Playing games brings closer the family. If you can not beat them, join them! Games are not just for kids. Ask them to teach you the rules and join them.
7. Video games improve hand-eye coordination. It has been proven that video games improve coordination in people with Parkinson’s disease or stroke survivors. There are studies that prove that surgeons who regularly play video games make less mistakes during surgery than those who do not play. 1
